October 2025 Newsletter: Down to the wire!

It’s almost that time of year folks, it’s almost time for our annual writing challenge! We’re so excited to jump into November and write with you all, but first, we have a few announcements of things happening in October to whet your appetite!

We’ll be at the Johnson County Library Writer’s Conference!

We’ll be presenting at the Johnson County Library Writer’s Conference on October 16-18. Make sure to register for this event to save your spot as space is limited! Bee will be presenting How to Jumpstart Your Novel, Joanie is on the In/Exclusivity panel and hosting the workshop Writing Authentically with Diversity, and Ali is running Critique Partner Speed Dating! Join us for all days or just for one, we wanna see you there!

Introducing… a goose!

Over the summer we’ve been cooking on a little mascot to represent our writers. They’re almost ready to come into the world but they need a name! Submit your name suggestions here and we’ll vote on the final name of our mascot closer to November, with the name to be announced at the Writing Til Dawn marathon!

Are you ready for November?

Our flagship novel challenge is getting a little makeover this year! Get ready for…

Novel November!

While we loved the playfully ominous “November Program,” we feel that Novel November is a much better name to represent what we do in November which is… write a novel!

Announcing our theme

This year’s theme is… Welcome to the KanMoWriCo Carnival!

Writing is fun, but it can also be chaotic, overwhelming, and feel rigged against you. Just like a carnival! From the delicious aroma of fried foods leading you down winding stalls, to ominously squeaking rides, and not to mention the games, writing something big is a lot like exploring a carnival. We hope you have some fun with the twists and turns, and when it gets overwhelming, we’ll be right there with you!

Join us for a Novel November Kickoff!

Join us October 25th at Waldo Library from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. for an overview of the November schedule, some fun brainstorming, and, of course, snacks. Meet your fellow writers before you hunker down to write your novel! We encourage you to attend this event if you’re new to the group or if you’re an old hand, it’s always fun to meet more writers before you both get busy writing. If you’ve never joined us for Novel November before, this is a great chance to find out what we’re all about!

Join us on October 31st for the return of a classic! Writing Til Dawn will be LIVE this year.

In-person chaos, games, and more. Writing Til Dawn is back! Starting on October 31st at midnight and going until 8 a.m. November first, this all night marathon is designed to give you a good kick start on your novel!

We’ll be at Hollis Renewal Center (11414 Kansas Ave, Kansas City, KS 66111) at 11 p.m., with writing starting at 12 a.m.! We’ll be in the lodge building and parking is available on-site. We’ll have snacks, drinks, and the chaotic energy that KanMoWriCo is known for. Join us for prizes and to get a head start on your novel!

Inspiration Corner

Planning to start a brand new novel in November? Here’s a preview from our Jumpstart Your Novel workshop to get you started. To flesh out your characters, identify these 3 things:

  1. Fear – What are they most afraid of?
  2. Want – What do they most want?
  3. Willing – How far are they willing to go for what they want?
  4. Lie – What’s one lie they believe is true?

As always, happy writing!

Joanie, Bee and Ali
