Novel November: Week Two

Congratulations, you made it to week two! By now, maybe the thrill is starting to wear off. The carnival food you sampled last week is feeling heavy and this whole thing is starting to look like a confusing mess. Why did you even come here, and where are you supposed to go? What ride is best to get on next? Are the lines always this long? This feeling is so common we call it the Second Week Slump.

It’s a scary place to be, and with the rush of the first week of excitement wearing off, your story might feel like less of a story and more of a jumble of random words.

This is normal.

If this is your first time, we want you to reread that sentence. Write it on a sticky note, a piece of paper, or put it on a giant banner. Week 2 is almost always the biggest challenge of the month, but we’re here for you!

Here are some ideas for staying locked in instead of heading home;

  • Stay (or get) connected: attend write-ins, participate in the big events (TMOD incoming!), and hang out in the Discord. You can ask for support, pick through plot problems with your fellow writers, or just complain! The Discord is a free space to talk about writing.
  • Support your fellow writers: cheer people on in the Discord, check in on your friends, post tips and encouragement from your favorite authors. Your favorite authors definitely have had writer’s block, they probably have some out-of-the-box tips for you to try!
  • Check out the trackbear leaderboard! Never underestimate how motivating it can be to see the number go up.

However you’re doing right now, your writing is an accomplishment! Keep going!
